REVELATION: A PANDEMIC POEM

At the beginning of our uncertain and unsettling journey through COVID-19, the City of Stockton thought a message from its Poet Laureate might provide some comfort. Many Stocktonians have told me that it did. I considered it a labor of love to write and record this poem in March 2020.

Works I Set My Hand To.

ROSES, PEACE BY PEACE

Written in 2017 as the Special Guest Poet for the 25th Anniversary of the "I Have A Dream" World Peace Rose Garden

at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Presented to Martin Luther King III and Arndrea King. Y'all have no idea... <3

EXCERPT:

“Wouldn’t God’s earthly garden be more peaceful

If humans grew more like roses?”

Limited Edition letterpress broadside poem set in Century Schoolbook typeface and printed on handmade paper

with rose petals from the 2023 Cleveland School Remembers Vigil. Image from the author's private collection.

I have created several poems for Natl Black Breastfeeding Week, and judged their annual competition.

EXPRESSION

As a mother who breastfed three times successfully, and once just barely, it was a special privilege to twice be commissioned to create poems for California's Celebration of National Black Breastfeeding Week.

EXCERPT:

“America latched onto black breasts

and the Black women graced with them…”

Letter broadside poem set in Garamond typeface

and printed on 11x17  100% rag paper.

TDOR (Transgender Day of Remembrance)

When a Straight Pride Parade was held in Modesto, I read TDOR at the counter-protest, because there are LGBTQ people near and dear to me. And because the Proud Boys fancied their cosplay proximity intimidating,

I decided to use my slam voice.

EXCERPT:

”the singular freedom, the everyday revolution

of being themselves…”

Letterpress broadside poem set in Garamond typeface

and printed on 11x17 100% rag paper, with glitter.
